NORTHERN ZONE GNMTA COORDINATING SECRETARY PROPOSED MEASURES TO CURB THE ABUSE OF NURSING UNIFORM

NORTHERN ZONE GNMTA COORDINATING SECRETARY PROPOSED MEASURES TO CURB THE ABUSE OF NURSING UNIFORM

Nursing is an iconic noble profession that is known for binding and mending broken lives in the society since time immemorial. This sets us apart from every profession, and indeed, has earned us an enviable position in the public’s calibration of professional nobility. On this account, I hope it is fairly understandable for one to get uncomfortable with the current compromises that is sweeping through our cherished profession.

I want to start off, and probably end with the dress code, for the time being. It is stated clearly in our professional adjustment studies that, professionalism is influenced by many variables such as hairstyle, make-up, uniform and image.

There is a direct link between how nurses portray themselves and the perception that it creates in the minds of patients in professional terms. In short, there is a reflexive relationship between our professional dressing and our professional image.

The public notion of the nurse is deemed as a professional health-care provider and is recognized by virtue of his or her uniform. The uniform as the first identification tag of the nurse should therefore be hallowed to the best of our ability.

MOH, GRNMA AND GNMTA,

Your hard work and dedication for the welfare of trainee-nurses and midwives is remarkable and can never be annulled in the annals of nurses and midwives.

You have been instrumental in all nurse-midwife activism that brought tremendous success.

I Kangoan Dam Abdul-Amin is of the view that our able mother association GRNMA in collaboration with MOH can raise the fallen standards of Ghanaian nurses and Midwives by registering our uniform. The nurse-midwife uniform should be registered and labeled properly for professional use.

That will make it easier to tell a professional from any imposter and also increase the chances of apprehending recalcitrants to foster accountability.

Any one who wishes to use the uniform for any other reason(s) such as theatrical or staged performances should be required to file for formal approval.

I wish to suggest that, Trainee-nurses and Midwives and all those in practice should avoid unnecessary abuse of the uniform on Social media platforms.

In summation, all the Nurses and Midwives Deputy Directors should see to it that  the professional dressing code is upheld with dignity and respect that comes with a professional signatory regalia.
